COMMUNICATING THE ISSUE OF UNDERWATER NOISE POLLUTION: THE “DEAF AS A FISH” PROJECT
Third International Conference on the Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life, Budapest
The issue of aquatic noise pollution is of increasing interest in the scientific community. However, this problem is largely ignored by the lay public, and the way experts communicate and sensitize the issue is critical to move public opinion. The issue of aquatic noise pollution is of increasing interest in the scientific community. However, this problem is largely ignored by the lay public, and the way experts communicate and sensitize the issue is critical to move public opinion. In 2010 a local Italian bank sponsored the Deaf as a fish project, aimed to make people aware with this environmental problem. Different activities were part of this project: a noise monitoring of the local coastal underwater noise and a census of the boats; the writing of a pamphlet for non-experts, with basics of marine bioacoustics and some good practices to prevent underwater noise pollution in everyday life, which was sent to many scientific libraries and marine museums and institutions around Italy; meetings in schools and different yacht clubs in the region. Results of the acoustic survey and the possible impacts of the recorded sea noise level on local animal species were presented.
