CMF was the brain-child of master teacher and avant garde vibraharpist Karl Berger. He brought in leading performers to teach workshops, giving students a chance to work and play with a huge array of some of the world's best new music, jazz, and improvisational musicians. I was privileged to work with Karl, David Izenzon (bass w/ Ornette), Ornette Colman, drummer Bobby Moses, Christian Wolf, Richard Titlebaum, Fred Rzewski, Bassist David Holland, and bebop sax master Jimmy Guiffry among others.

Eastman was a real eye-opener for me in terms of the industry of music. I took a concentrated course of study in sound engineering with some great professors: Electronics with Walter Jung (Op-amp cook-book fame) Acoustics with Mel Sprinkle, audio engineering with Ed Green (Elvis and many big live broadcast events). After engineering an exquisitely composed and produced commercial for Alpo Dog food I decided that Eastman's comodification of music did not square with my passion for music's…

Studied with Simeon Wade, who was at the time introducing America to Michelle Foucault. The course was focused on intellectual history since the "Age or Reason."

I flitted around to many collages including Eastman School of Music, Claremont Grad School, the Creative Music Foundatiuon (Cornell extension), Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Tech Extension, and La Verne Collage - where I was an assistant professor in music composition. I always seemed to get work that was more engaging than the curriculum so I now have a patchwork of academic experiences without any of the badges.

  • Hear Where We Are: Sound Ecology and Sense of Place

    Springer

:"Hear Where We Are" is a natural history of sound perception examining how humans and other animals use sound to communicate, but also to establish boundaries over which to entice others, or defend; hearing acoustical cues of danger and fear, or abundance and belonging. In a wide ranging popular science the reader learns how all hearing animals establish their unique relationships with their surroundings through sound.

  • COMMUNICATING THE ISSUE OF UNDERWATER NOISE POLLUTION: THE “DEAF AS A FISH” PROJECT

Third International Conference on the Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life, Budapest

The issue of aquatic noise pollution is of increasing interest in the scientific community. However, this problem is largely ignored by the lay public, and the way experts communicate and sensitize the issue is critical to move public opinion. In 2010 a local Italian bank sponsored the Deaf as a fish project, aimed to make people aware with this environmental problem. Different activities were part of this project: a noise monitoring of the local coastal underwater noise and a census of the boats; the writing of a pamphlet for non-experts, with basics of marine bioacoustics and some good practices to prevent underwater noise pollution in everyday life, which was sent to many scientific libraries and marine museums and institutions around Italy; meetings in schools and different yacht clubs in the region. Results of the acoustic survey and the possible impacts of the recorded sea noise level on local animal species were presented.
